After exploring Powtoon, Year 6 students used other presentation tools such as Haiku Deck, FlowVella and Google Slides. Students worked either on their iPads or on computers. Students learned from peer and teacher feedback as they presented their work to the class. Presentation skills will be useful during the IB PYP Exhibition. For links to presentation apps for students, read the post 'Recommended apps for Year 6 students'.

Year 6 students learned how to use Powtoon as a tool to create animated presentations. Powtoon is a free web based app with some elements that are paid. We used the free elements. Powtoon works on a computer's web browser. Below is an animation made by one of the students telling us about themselves. One of our focuses was privacy on the internet. We discussed how to register for accounts on the internet and create content without giving out too much information about our selves.

The students shared their animations in Google Classroom. We had a chance to look at each other's animations and leave comments. The students are looking at other alternatives like Google Slides, FlowVella and Haiku Deck for creating presentations on their iPads.
Year6 students are exploring Google Classroom, a virtual learning space provided on the school's Google Apps For Education platform. To access the classroom, students signed into Google Classroom with their school e-mail addresses. They used a class code to access their (private) ICT class. I will post announcements, tasks and share resources in the virtual classroom. Students will post their work and receive feedback from their peers and myself. Google Classroom will allow us to practise Digital Citizenship skills as well as share documents and resources. It is Year6's introduction to e-learning. Dear Parents,
Please find below a list of recommended apps for your children's iPads. If you have a device other than an iPad please let us know so that we can try and recommend equivalent apps where we can, or suggest alternatives. Please note that in some cases your child may wish to install other apps that are not on this list depending on the nature of their individual or group project. All apps on this list are FREE. As we got comfortable navigating the edmodo website, students discovered there was more we could do than just posting and replying. I heard "we can take a quiz or a poll!". Students had a surprise the next time they were in the computer lab. They had two notifications, they were to take a quiz and a poll.
Students liked the fact that they received instant feedback after completing the quiz. Edmodo showed them their incorrect answers and what they should have been. They were not worried about how well they did, the experience was just awesome. The poll was interesting as it allowed them to explain why they voted for something. See below a snapshot of the poll and a few explanations. Year 6 students have been learning about blogging and social networks. A number of us already had personal blogs and accounts with popular social networks. It was interesting to realise that many of us were below the legal age to be on some of these networks. We learned to always set up online accounts with assistance from our parents or a legal guardian. We decided to use edmodo, a closed social network for schools. We created accounts and discussed how we would interact on this network. We agreed we would use it purely for educational purposes and came up with a Digital Citizenship Agreement. Among other things we agreed we would
After creating accounts we edited our account settings. We had some fun changing profile pictures and told the class about our choices. See below a snap shot from our edmodo group. We are looking forward to taking a self grading short quiz set up on edmodo and participating in a poll. Come back soon to see results of our poll.
In Year 6, we discussed good Digital Citizenship and appropriate use of others' digital content online. We used google's advanced image search to find images licensed for re-use. We created a beach image using a number of pictures. We brought all the images one by one into out 'beach' working file as layers, named our layers and manipulated them using tools like the Magic Wand, Eraser and Select. Some images had to be scaled to desired sizes. Students learned a great deal about some features of Art Weaver Free, a free to download and install image editor for windows computers. One could also load and run Photoshop filters if they purchase the professional version, Artweaver Plus. A student reflecting on their learning using the Songify App for the iPhone While discussing we also learned about other products and Apps available on mobile devices such as Photoshop Express, Aviary (GooglePlay and itunes) and Photobooth which is pre-installed on iOS devices among many others.
